Concerned Citizens Call for Accountability and Action in Mweiga Ward

Concerned Citizens, a civic movement committed to promoting good governance in Kenya—co-convened by Prof. Fred Ogola—stands in firm support of the people of Nyeri and all other Kenyans seeking responsible and transparent leadership. Our work is rooted in upholding the governance frameworks of the country, including the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the laws enacted by Parliament, and policies developed by various ministries.

We are guided by the principle that all sovereign power belongs to the people, as articulated in Article 1 of the Constitution. This power must be exercised only following the law. In addition, Chapter Six, which addresses leadership and integrity, clearly states in Article 73(1)(b) that public office is a responsibility to serve the people, not to rule over them.

It is in this spirit that we express our deep concern over the ongoing neglect and poor leadership exhibited by Hon. Njuguna Kawanjiku, the sitting Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Mweiga Ward. The situation in the Mwireri and Ikumari areas is alarming and has reached an unacceptable level.

Despite repeated pleas from residents, Hon. Kawanjiku has refused or failed to commission repairs on severely damaged roads, which are now a daily hazard for schoolchildren, local workers, and residents. The deteriorating road conditions have caused not just inconvenience but also tragic loss of life, including a hard-working man who died after his tractor overturned ,and a motorbike rider who was recently stabbed due to the insecurity brought about by overgrown bushes along the road.

Community leaders have made multiple attempts to engage the MCA, only to be met with arrogance and apathy. Reports suggest that Mr. Kawanjiku dismisses concerns from constituents by claiming that those who did not vote for him have no right to question his performance. Such a stance is not only morally wrong but also a direct violation of Kenya’s national values of inclusivity, accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.

We therefore make the following demands on behalf of the people of Mweiga:

  1. Immediate and comprehensive repair of all dilapidated roads in Mweiga Ward—not just selective patchwork.

  2. Transparency and publication of road maintenance plans and budget allocations from the MCA’s office.

  3. Installation of roadside security lighting to enhance safety and curb rising insecurity.

  4. Repair and rehabilitation of non-functioning boreholes, an issue the MCA has been fully aware of for over a year.

Should these demands continue to be ignored, we reserve the right to initiate a lawful petition for the recall of Hon. Njuguna Kawanjiku, as provided for under Article 104 of the Constitution of Kenya.

The people of Mweiga deserve leadership that listens, acts, and serves every citizen—regardless of their political affiliation. Public office is not a privilege but a duty to uplift lives and respond to the needs of the people.
